Product Description
Oil Seals, also known as radial oil seals, radial shaft seals or rotary shaft lip seals, are round sealing devices used to seal between two machine parts that rotate relative to each other. They are used to seal lubrication in and/or contamination out, or to separate dissimilar media.
Oil seals for rotating applications that are properly installed suck in a small amount of air from the atmosphere, and this suction phenomenon keeps oil from leaking outside.
As for oil seals for reciprocal movements, the difference in oil film thicknesses between the push and pull strokes constitutes the oil leakage. As such, the oil seal’s contact pressure profile (maximum contact pressure gradient) is determined so as to achieve optimum oil film thicknesses.

Applications
Material selection is important to the life of a radial shaft seal. The elastomer’s resistance to temperature, abrasion, chemicals, weather, sunlight, and ozone can affect a profile’s longevity and performance. The two most prevalent materials are Nitrile and Viton.
The durometer of an oil seal is typically dependent on the material it is made with. Common oil seal materials along with their durometers are as follows:
Nitrile (NBR) Oil Seal: 70 durometer (+/- 5)
Viton (FKM) Oil Seal: 75 durometer (+/- 5)
Polyacrylate (PA) Oil Seal: 75 durometer (+/- 5)
Silicone Oil Seal: 80 durometer (+/- 5)
